The two defensive stalwarts spent a long time together at Spurs as well as Ajax, the club that originally discovered their talent. In fact, the two have played an astounding 353 matches with each other throughout their careers.

It has come to a point where if someone mentions Alderweireld, you’re bound to have Vertonghen’s name pop up in your head as well. The latter spent 8 seasons at Spurs since signing from Ajax in 2012.

The two have reunited again this summer for the Belgian side and started along with Vermaelen in defence against the 2016 Euro champions. Thorgan Hazard’s strike 3 minutes from half-time turned out to be the only goal of the game.

Belgium’s defence kept their composure and ended the game with a clean sheet, booking a place in the last 8 against Italy. Roberto Martinez’s side boasts of a perfect record so far at the competition with 4 wins from 4.

Their defence has played a massive role in that, with Denmark being the only side that has managed to put a goal past them. And the task against Portugal was probably their toughest so far – with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo Jota, and Joao Felix lining up against them.

But they passed the test and won the plaudits of fans around the globe. Spurs fans took a special interest in the game and when the club Twitter account congratulated Alderweireld on the win, they demanded Vertonghen’s inclusion in the tweet as well.
