Tottenham Hotspur fans have mixed reactions to Toby Alderweireld’s 2020 UEFA Euros exit with Belgium

There was a time not long back when Tottenham Hotspur housed four Belgium players in their line-up. Nacer Chadli, Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele, and Toby Alderweireld all played in the same Spurs team as far back as 2016.

That number is now cut down to one. Vertonghen left the club last summer to join SL Benfica, Nacer Chadli was sold to West Bromwich Albion in 2016, and Dembele left for China in January 2019.

Alderweireld still remains at the club and is arguably the main man in Spurs’ backline. That is why the report by The Athletic (Subscription Required) [as covered by TTLAB] of him wanting to leave the club would worry the fans.

As of now, he is still a Tottenham player. However, fans’ perception of him can change if the transfer saga ends up in his departure.

Alderweireld wants out?

Spurs fans had a special interest in the Euros 2020 semi-final between Italy and Belgium as Alderweireld started again in their 5-man backline. He was partnered by ex-Spurs star Vertonghen and former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

The Italians always looked in control of the game and raced to a 2-0 lead just a minute before half-time. A brilliant finish by Nicolo Barella after some questionable defending from Vertonghen, and a Lorenzo Insigne curler, was the difference between the two teams.

But the two-goal cushion did not last long. Jeremy Doku, who was brilliant all night, won a penalty in first-half added time and Romelu Lukaku slotted it home to make it 2-1.

However, the scoreline did not change all game, and Belgium once again succumbed on the big stage. After the game, some fans consoled Alderweireld and other ex-Spurs stars, while others pointed the finger at the 32-year-old for his performance.
