Former coach sees similarities between new Tottenham signing Bryan Gil and Man City icon David Silva
Jose Luis Mendilibar, who coached/managed Bryan Gil last season has shared his verdict on the player.
Mendilibar was in charge of the Eibar side, where Gil was loan at, until the club’s relegation last season. The player made 29 appearances for the club last season during his loan spell.
Speaking to Spanish outlet Marca (via Sport Witness) [h/t football.london] the former Eibar manager had nothing but good things to say about Tottenham’s new boy. He suggested that it is a good step in Gil’s career, adding that he told the player’s agent that a club will come for Gil. Making it clear that he won’t return to Sevilla.
Speaking about his abilities, Mendilibar assured that Gil can play 90 minutes and makes “great efforts”. He acknowledged the player’s “little body”. However, he suggested that Gil is a different player.
“Someone may think what he’s going to do with that little body, but Bryan is a different player: skilled, fast, with guts.”
Bryan Gil, the next David Silva?
Mendilibar took it to the next level, hinting about similarities with David Silva, who won four league titles with Manchester City. He advocated that Silva had a similar body type when he arrived at Manchester City. However, he left with a loaded trophy cabinet, bar the UEFA Champions League.
However, the manager thinks that there are still areas to work in. He revealed that during his Eibar days he asked Gil to try to steal the ball instead of just receiving. Since the opponents were not ready to defend Gil, he needs to be more “rogue”.
