Atalanta boss provides fresh update on Tottenham Hotspur target Cristian Romero
Tottenham Hotspur have been provided with a transfer boost in the race for Cristian Romero, with Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini stating, according to Football Italia (h/t Football.london), that the Italian outfit will have to evaluate the player’s position when he returns to training on Monday.
Spurs, who appointed Fabio Paratici as the new Director of Football in June are keen on signing Cristian Romero, with the player also wanting to complete the move to Tottenham this summer.
Atalanta signed Romero from Juventus as part of a two-year agreement, post which they would have the option to activate his release, something Atalanta plan on doing this summer before looking likely to sell to Tottenham for a good profit.
Romero, who has had a good three seasons in Italy, was deservedly awarded Serie A defender of the Year award last season. The 23-year-old followed this up by winning the Copa America with Argentina this summer.
Spurs after Romero
This led to Barcelona also being interested in signing the player, but with their swap deal being rejected by the Italian outfit, Tottenham are seemingly frontrunners to sign the defender.
Spurs’ links with Romero makes sense considering central defender Toby Alderweireld left the club earlier this month.
And according to Football Italia (h/t Football. london), Gian Piero Gasperini talked about Romero’s future while speaking to the media on Saturday afternoon after the team’s pre-season friendly win against Pordenone.
“I haven’t actually seen Romero yet, as he’ll be back on Monday. We’ll see what his position is, then of course there is a negotiation in progress between the two clubs. We’ll see what the evaluations will be if he does leave.”
According to TuttoMercatoWeb (h/t Football. London), Gasperini also talked about how new signing Matteo Lovato could be a replacement for Romero if he does eventually leave the club.
“He has already played three friendlies. If he replaces Romero, we’re fine”.
