Transfer News: Southampton join Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United in the race to sign Sam Johnstone
According to The Sun (h/t Daily Mail), Southampton are planning to make an offer for Sam Johnstone in the January transfer window, amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.
The England stopper was impressive against Andorra in the Three Lions’ game this weekend and even assisted his team’s fifth goal on the night. The 28-year-old has also been impressive for West Bromwich Albion during his stay at the club.
Despite his club dropping down the Championship earlier this year, Johnstone is a sought-after name in the Premier League and while he could be a free agent next summer, the Saints are apparently planning to test the Baggies’ resolve this winter.
Southampton could lose Fraser Forster as early as next year and Alex McCarthy is their only senior backup as of now. The Hammers’ case is not so different, with Lukasz Fabianski out of contract next summer and Alphonse Areola’s future undecided.
Farewell for Hugo?
Spurs would themselves be preparing to appoint Hugo Lloris’ successor between the sticks if the France international doesn’t renew his current deal that expires at the end of this season. Speaking in August, the 34-year-old claimed that the club is yet to approach him regarding a new deal. (h/t Daily Mail)
Lloris has been a loyal servant ever since his transfer from Lyon almost a decade ago. During that time, he has been a constant presence in every manager’s lineup and has achieved immaculate success with the French national team.
But at 34, his best years might well be behind him. If Spurs do want to get Johnstone, they would be hoping that the goalkeeper goes on to choose them over the other options available to him.
