Kevin Phillips thinks it may be too early for Tottenham target Harry Souttar to join the Premier League
In conversation with Football Insider (h/t Birmingham Live), Former PL striker Kevin Phillips has suggested that it could be too early for Tottenham Hotspur target and Stoke City F.C. defender Harry Souttar to join the Premier League.
The 22-year-old defender has been impressive this season. The Australian defender has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, and Everton recently. He has become a dependable asset to the Potters this campaign.
Kevin Phillps who was a coach at Stoke City undertook a great part in the development of the Souttar. The former striker spoke about the young defender’s progress and abilities as a player:
“I did not see him developing in this way. He definitely had it in him but he needed to drive himself. He has done that though, so credit to him. I think the Premier League would be a big step up for him but he is full of confidence right now. I would like to see him get promoted with Stoke, rather than moving to Villa. I am unsure whether he’s ready. He is definitely performing for Stoke right now.”
The Australian international has also claimed that his entire focus is to help Stoke which may suggest that he is happy with his place at the bet365stadium and may not be looking for an immediate change of club at the moment. Stoke City have started the season in fine form and are currently 4th in the EFL Championship table.
Any move to an established PL club like Tottenham Hotspur would be a really big step up for the 22 -year-old and brings with it another set of expectations and burdens. It could also be a great step up but Phillips thinks that it would be better for the young defender to get promoted with the Potters.

Cristian Romero seems to be making his place in that central defensive position along with Eric Dier but Nuno Espirito Santo could do with another option in there to help him rotate and figure out the best partnership at the heart of this Spurs defence. Any move for Souttar seems unlikely at the moment but could be of great value to the North London club.
