Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg highlights why he didn’t celebrate after goal vs Leeds United

In his post-match thoughts (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur ace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg revealed why he did not celebrate after scoring the opening goal for his side against Leeds United.

The arrival of Antonio Conte has brought along with it an aura of excitement at N-17. The Italian manager is still enjoying the nascent stages of his tenure with Spurs but there already seems to be a shift in the mentality of the squad.

There is a more free-flowing attacking system in place with the players willing to press the opposition higher up the pitch. The North Londoners were also willing to commit more bodies forward and it ultimately paid dividends in their latest Premier League fixture against Leeds United.

The Danish professional footballer commented on his reason not to celebrate against the Peacocks on Sunday:

“I was actually a little bit annoyed because we should have scored a couple of times before and the game wasn’t technically going well. “So it was more like ‘I scored but let’s get back and get another one’ because at home a draw I was never going to be celebrating. I only celebrate the wins and we did that.”

The 26-year-old slotted the ball past Illan Meslier in a calm manner after the goalkeeper was off his line in an attempt to thwart Lucas Moura initially. The former Southampton player then chose not to celebrate and simply urged his teammates to get back to their position so that they could take the game by the neck.

Their intensity paid dividends when Sergio Reguilon put them in the lead in the 69th minute. The full-back was the first to react to an Eric Dier free-kick that hit the post courtesy of a heavy deflection. The first half was a dull affair from the perspective of the Lilywhites and the supporters made their unhappiness very apparent by booing the players at half-time.

The 26-year-old midfielder admitted that it wasn’t a pleasant situation and hoped that it wouldn’t happen again:

“I kind of understand it. I hope it won’t happen again but I understand there are high demands, high pressure,”

Conte is yet to be defeated as manager of Tottenham Hotspur but his job at N-17 is far from done. The Italian manager would be hoping that his team can show the same character throughout the season and win matches regularly.
