Transfer News: Burnley ace James Tarkowski eyed by Tottenham Hotspur amidst contract impasse
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur have shown an interest in signing Burnley defender James Tarkowski amidst interest from Premier League and European clubs. He has been a crucial piece in Sean Dyche’s side as they look to survive relegation this season.
Tarkowski will see his contract with the Clarets expire at the end of the 2021-22 season. He has featured in 13 matches this season and has scored a goal while assisting twice in the process. Tottenham fans would have had the chance to get a closer look at him yesterday had Burnley’s clash not gotten postponed due to intense snowfall.
The 29-year-old has already communicated to his club that he has no intentions to sign a contract extension and wants a move that would help him crack Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad. It would be a big blow to his current club considering they have relied on the Englishman’s services to remain in the top flght all these years.
Spurs have been keeping tabs on him for a long time and could move for him in the coming transfer windows as a result.
However, they will face competition from fellow PL clubs West Ham United and Newcastle United for his signature, with the latter being a valid threat ever since their Saudi-backed takeover. Top clubs from Italy and Spain are likely to join the race for the centre-back, which could make it even harder for Daniel Levy to get Tarkowski, granted the club’s interest in him is genuine.
Yes or No?
Should we go in for him in the upcoming transfer windows, it shouldn’t be hard for us to convince him of the project Antonio Conte has got going at N17 now. And at 29, we would be getting a centre-back at the prime of his career with ample experience and knowledge of the Premier League to be a replacement for one of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

It will be interesting to see how this situation develops since the England international would be available for free in the summer. Tarkowski isn’t the most famous name in world football and neither is he the best defender the league has ever seen,
But his spell at Burnley has shown that he can get the job done and is capable of leading a Premier League team’s backline. Moreover, we could use some cover at the back, especially with Conte’s system making use of three centre-backs.
Cristian Romero is an unknown quantity in the Premier League as he hasn’t even had half a season to showcase his consistency since his move this summer. Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez don’t form the most consistent duo at the back while Japhet Tanganga has mostly been a squad player who has been used in a couple of positions in defence.
