Hugo Lloris considered AS Roma move but is confident over agreeing contract extension at Tottenham Hotspur

According to Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic (Subscription Required), Hugo Lloris contemplated a move to AS Roma ahead of this season but is confident, alongside Tottenham Hotspur, in agreeing to an extension. He recently helped his club to a clean sheet during a win against Norwich City by a 3-0 scoreline.

The 34-year-old has earned six clean sheets this season, having played 15 matches across all competitions. He has been one of the most consistent performers in a Tottenham side that have struggled for consistency over the years.

Contract negotiations have been ongoing for the last two months over a renewal since the Frenchman will see his current contract expire at the end of the 2021-22 season. While there is no agreement between both parties, they are confident in signing a new deal.

Tottenham Hotspur captain, Hugo Lloris, is on a contract that expires in 2022.

Lloris contemplated a move to Roma the previous summer, which would have seen him link up with his previous manager, Jose Mourinho. He has also expressed his desire to play for his hometown Nice, but he still has years ahead of him in the top-flight as a goalkeeper.

Despite being in the latter stages of his career, he has not shown signs of any regression, which shows his quality in goal. Pierluigi Gollini has not been able to displace the France international since coming in and that is a nod to his abilities as a keeper.

The Spurs skipper has been a solid presence at the back despite the defence struggling at times to keep the opponents at bay. He has three clean sheets in the bag while helping the team to four wins and a draw, having played five matches under Antonio Conte.

It is good to see the Tottenham captain seemingly continuing to ply his trade at N17 for one more year since we could be vying for titles under Conte. Our fans would be dreaming of seeing the skipper stand on the podium in a Tottenham shirt with a winner’s medal around his neck.

At the same time, this also calls for Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici to look for options who could fill the boots of the France goalkeeper in the years to come. We have to plan for our future ahead of time to safeguard us against losing such quality in the future. Gollini was a smart acquisition but that is only a loan deal.
