Tottenham Hotspur ace Harry Winks lauded as “the main man” for display against Liverpool by Jamie Redknapp
Harry Winks was excellent for Tottenham Hotspur against Liverpool, which has prompted Jamie Redknapp to label him as “the main man” for the club in the game. The former was arguably the best player for his team on the night as we drew 2-2 at home.
Winks was involved in both the goals for Tottenham, but it would not show up in his tally. However, he topped other metrics for his side like touches, passes, blocks, interceptions and distance covered, which gives an idea of how well he performed against a title heavyweight.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Redknapp conveyed that he was the best performer for Spurs on the day and was impressed by the Englishman’s display. He added how things were not always rosy for the Spurs midfielder, but he was a leader on the pitch.
“There are certain times in a game that a tackle sets the tempo. The way that Harry Winks goes and wins it, this is exactly what you need. It gets the crowd up, all of a sudden there is a bit of pace to it, a bit of energy. If Harry Winks does not make that tackle, you get countered. His passing, the way he intercepted the ball. He has not always been a favourite under Nuno or Jose but I thought he was the main man in there, he did a great job in so many different aspects.”
Back in contention?
It was not a fluke from the Englishman as he had previously shown improvement under Antonio Conte. His second-half performance against Leeds United in the Premier League is one such example. He may now have turned around his fortunes at N17 and would need to build on it moving forward.
Conte has preferred a midfielder painting of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp but, the 25-year-old’s recent displays would probably give him a selection headache from hereon now. No manager would mind such a dilemma, especially one who is on a mission to bring trophies and Champions League football back to N17 this season.

The England midfielder was not enjoying a lot of time out in the sun under Nuno Espirito Santo but has climbed his way back into contention to have a genuine chance at being a starter. He would still need to be more consistent to get the better of Hojbjerg and Skipp, but he is on the right path.

This development would be a massive boost for the North London club as Winks’ good form comes right before the January window. If he keeps on playing like this, Spurs may not have to worry about their depth in midfield for a while.
Winks showed a lot of promise when he was originally breaking into the Spurs starting XI. He lost a bit of direction along the line, but it seems like he is finally on his way to fulfilling his potential.
