Tottenham manager issues fresh injury updates on Ryan Sessegnon and Steven Bergwijn
Speaking in a press conference, as quoted by Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte revealed when we could expect to see Ryan Sessegnon and Steven Bergwijn back on the field.
Steven Bergwijn is having a volatile season. The youngster had chances to cement his place in the squad. However, a calf injury has prevented him from making appearances since the last week of December.
In his latest press conference, the former Inter Milan and Chelsea manager revealed that the Dutch forward still requires some time to regain full match fitness.
“We have to wait a bit before we know when he will be available.”
Ryan Sessegnon has struggled with injury issues throughout the season. The English wing-back faced muscle issues in the last week of December and has missed three Premier League matches since. The 21-year-old’s unavailability has been a significant concern for Antonio Conte’s side.
Sessegnon returns?
Conte suggested that Sessegnon has already recovered and could be in the conversation to start against Chelsea. However, the Italian manager also added that Bergwijn’s issues look severe, and the club will take time to assess the problem.
“Ryan Sessegnon’s situation is better than Steven Bergwijn’s. I think he’s almost ready to be available in the next game; in the FA Cup, he’ll be available. For Steve, I think we have to pay a bit more attention because his problem was in the calf, where you have to pay more attention and wait a bit before we have him available again.”
Even though the return of Giovani Lo Celso has provided a massive boost to the squad, the midfield lineup of Tottenham is still vulnerable. The Covid-19 surge has taken a toll on the fitness of many players, and overusing them in the hectic schedule could create problems. Therefore, the return of Sessegnon is a massive boost to the squad.
On the other hand, Tottenham currently don’t have a lot of depth in the forward line. Son Heung-min has been in scintillating form, and Harry Kane has rejuvenated his goal thrust. Lucas Moura also had played impressively in the last few matches. These three front players have suited Conte’s 3-4-3 formation. However, there are very few backup options available. Any injury among these three players would be a massive blow to Spurs’ performance.

Bergwijn has shown that he can be trusted in big matches. However, more than the quality, his availability is highly required to tackle the hectic schedule. But, it seems, Conte has to manage without the young Dutch forward for a few more games.
