Tottenham Hotspur legend Clive Allen believes Manchester United star Jesse Lingard could unlock ‘frustrated’ Harry Kane
Speaking to talkSPORT (h/t Express), former Tottenham Hotspur forward Clive Allen believes that Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard would help get more out of Spurs captain and talisman Harry Kane.
Kane has not been having a good time in front of goal so far this season, racking up just four goals in 17 Premier League appearances. The Spurs star has been prolific for the club in the past few years but has struggled to replicate the same goalscoring form this campaign.
Allen claims that Kane looks a little frustrated at the lack of opportunities created for him. He believes that could change should Tottenham bring in Lingard.
“Harry Kane is looking a little frustrated at the lack of opportunities created for him. Someone of Lingard’s quality would be a fabulous addition. He is a talented player and at the moment Spurs are looking for an injection.”
Lingard meanwhile, has barely featured for United this season, despite the club facing struggles in midfield. He has made just three appearances so far under interim boss Ralf Rangnick, hardly making him a regular in the first XI.
Allen alluded to Lingard’s time at West Ham last season, when the forward was sent on loan to the London club to gain some regular minutes. The Englishman exploded into form for the Hammers as he helped them to a top-six finish. The Tottenham legend believes that Lingard can bring the same creativity to Spurs, which could bode well for Kane’s performances up front.
The message could well be something for Spurs manager Antonio Conte to consider. The Italian is said to want at least three players before the current transfer window shuts according to European football expert Gabriele Marcotti.
“I think obviously he wants to bring in players. People have made a big deal about the wing-backs – I think he’s thinking more of a centre-back and a central midfielder and a reserve striker. I think that would be his wishlist.”
With only one senior striker in our squad, Kane seems to be having a hard time replicating his usual goalscoring form this season. The skipper neither has a backup for support nor the creative support that can see him thrive.
Enter Lingard, who could just be what our squad need at the moment. Lingard’s spell away at West Ham was incredible, as the player not only regularly found the net for the Hammers but also turned provider for most of his teammates’ goals.

We have failed to sign a backup striker for Kane this term, but we could make amends by signing a creative midfielder who can provide the Englishman with the chances he craves. Lingard is a serious candidate to consider for this role, especially with Heung-Min Son also out injured for a while.
Manchester United have so far been inactive in the transfer market, with neither ins nor outs, but a bid from us to sign Lingard may just kick things off. Lingard too would be looking for a move away in order to gain regular first-team minutes and aid his chances of making the England squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
