In conversation after the victory against Manchester City (h/t The Independent), Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier highlighted the importance of taking this result in a positive manner.
The 28-year-old defender started the game against the Citizens after being unavailable due to injury for a while. The Lilywhites were looking brittle at the back in the run-up to the match at the Etihad, coupled with bland form in front of goal.
Harry Kane was back at his best and bagged the three points late in added time with a composed header that put the ball in the back of Ederson’s net. The North Londoners have now completed the league double over Man City this season.
In his interview (h/t The Independent), Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has urged his side to turn this result into a positive whilst using it as a launching pad to great effect for the rest of the season:
“I think we have to take this win in the right way, not get carried away but recognise what we need to do as a team to get results and play well. I think it’s really important how we take this result. We have to take it with humility and understand that as a team we can be very good.”
Spurs have had a roller coaster ride this season, to say the least. Nuno Espirito Santo took over as manager at the start of the season and was quickly relieved of his duties. Antonio Conte succeeded him but an early exit in the UEFA Conference League and the inability to maintain consistency in the PL shows that there is still a lot to be done at Hotspur Way.
The North London side also missed out on several of their priority targets and somehow managed to secure a deal for Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur on the deadline day of the January transfer window.
With several players like Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, and Bryan Gil departing on loan in January, there seems to be a bit of a rebuilding phase going on. The departure of Dele Alli gives you the feeling that the club could be headed in a new direction under the Italian manager.
With Eric Dier back in the fray, the Lilywhites would now have an experienced head in the heart of the defence. His experience would be key in helping anchor this backline and the English international has proven to be a solid leader at the back in the last couple of seasons.
