Antonio Conte warns Tottenham Hotspur against becoming another Everton
According to the Evening Standard, Antonio Conte has made an example out of Everton to caution Tottenham Hotspur about the stern challenge that awaits them in the Premier League moving forward. He spoke on the subject ahead of the clash against the Toffees in the league, which will take place at Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Tottenham have suffered a mediocre campaign in the league overall so far as they sit seventh in the league table with 42 points from 25 matches. Moreover, they have also experienced increased competition from the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United in the pursuit to get into the European spots for next season.
Conte has now chipped in with his thoughts while using Frank Lampard’s side as an example to warn Spurs not to let up. He has sent a message to his players that the English top-flight will become even more challenging in the future. The boss has inferred that they could end up in the same position as the Merseyside club if they do not improve their fortunes going forward.
“The level of this league is so high. You have to pay great attention and it’s my forecast that in the future it will be worse. Worse in the sense that it will be very, very difficult and then you’ll have to pay [even] greater attention. Teams that at this moment seem to be in the middle, they could slip. For sure, Everton is a good example. You look at the squad of Everton, their players, and you can think it’s impossible that Everton is fighting relegation.”
A worst-case scenario
Some may think that Conte’s predicted outcome is far-fetched, and we will not fall so far. However, we cannot simply overlook the similarities between Everton and us and how both teams have fared over the past few years. Both sides have seen quite a lot of managerial changes over the last two years, and their transfer spending has failed to provide them with any success.
Moreover, Lampard’s side have seen their city rivals, Liverpool achieve titles in recent years, just like we have seen with Arsenal and Chelsea. The Gunners have not been at the top to the same extent, but they have found a way to win silverware regardless of their decline. Not to mention they are now building a strong project under Mikel Arteta, further giving ammo to Conte’s warnings.

Hence, the former Inter Milan boss is right to make that claim when one considers how teams around us have been improving in recent times. Teams like Wolves and West Ham have posed stern competition to us this term, whereas Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton and Graham Potter’s Brighton and Hove Albion are building potentially solid projects as well.
To add fuel to the fire, we cannot ignore how clubs like Aston Villa are willing to back Steven Gerrard to push them to newer heights. The Tottenham boss probably has given his opinion after taking all these contexts into account. The onus is on the club’s board to ensure that the Italian’s words are heeded and the worst does not come to pass.
