Tottenham Hotspur skipper Hugo Lloris reveals the key voices in the dressing room ahead of Everton clash
Speaking on Twitch as part of a Tottenham Hotspur Q&A to celebrate his 400 appearances for the club (h/t football.london), Spurs captain Hugo Lloris admitted that there were other leaders and voices in the dressing room to help him spur the team on ahead of a game.
Lloris is one of the most senior players in the squad, having joined Tottenham in 2012 from Lyon, and has gone on to prove his mettle as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. Known for his leadership skills, he was appointed captain in the 2015/16 season and has not looked back since.
The Frenchman revealed what it was like in the dressing room in the moments leading up to the game, saying it was always exciting and the noise wakes up the room to prepare them for the game.
“It’s quite noisy and then you go on the field. It’s also the kind of thing that wakes up a changing room, but it’s always exciting the few moments before you go on the field.”
Lloris is also the captain of the French national team, having led his country to the FIFA World Cup in 2018. No stranger to dressing rooms and strong voices within the team, he has continued to be an inspiration to others in the squad and often led by example.
Anyone playing football would tell you how important a pep talk from the captain is before a game, or how crucial his role is in inspiring his team to victory prior to stepping out on the field. Lloris has been handed this responsibility for both club and country, and carries it well.
However, at Spurs, the Frenchman said that he shared the responsibility of being a leader and giving a pre-match talk with other senior stars like Harry Kane, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Eric Dier. He said it was a good thing to share the experience together with his teammates.
“It depends the feeling, it depends. Also it’s not only my responsibility as there are also important players in the changing room, some leaders like Harry, like Pierre, like Eric Dier who are quite vocal. That’s good because we share this experience together and then obviously there is the manager and coaching staff.”
Kane is also the skipper of the England national team, so it comes as no surprise that he is one of the names that Lloris mentioned. At times, the striker has also led the Spurs side out in matches when the Frenchman was out injured or rested.
Despite being a relatively new signing, Hojbjerg seems to have gained a lot of respect among his teammates if he was one of the few stars to have a major voice in the dressing room. The Dane was also captain of Southampton, before his move to north London in 2020.

Another senior figure in the team in Dier has also been named by Lloris as a leader, which will shock few. Having been in the side since 2014, the Englishman has grown to be a natural leader at the back, marshalling the troops in defence and being someone Lloris can also depend on when needed.
At 35, it is not known how much longer the Spurs captain will remain at the club and lead the side. However, he can depart the team knowing that the future of the squad is in good hands due to the presence of leaders such as Kane, Hojbjerg, and Dier.
