Tottenham Hotspur have a good chance of signing Middlesbrough starlet Djed Spence
According to Football League World (h/t Yorkshire Evening Post), Tottenham Hotspur have taken hold of firm ground in the race to sign Middlesbrough prospect Djed Spence ahead of the summer transfer window. He has been one of the best youngsters in the Championship this season and has earned lots of praises for his impressive displays.
Tottenham are keen to secure Spence’s signature to boost the quality of their squad. He was highly sought after in the January transfer window but a move had come to fruition. That being said, the North Londoners appear to be in the driving seat to land the Englishman.
Spurs also face competition from their Premier League rivals, Leeds United, who are also monitoring the player’s situation. It will be interesting to see what lies in store for the English defender as the summer transfer window draws closer with each passing day.
Can Spurs sign Spence?
As Emerson Royal has struggled to live up to expectations, faith has been put in Matt Doherty, who had arguably performed well of late. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers star is neither young nor a consistent performer and it is debatable if he is the answer to our woes at right wing-back.
Spence has shown himself to be a rather dynamic player and could emerge as a long term solution to our problems. After all, the Boro star has been playing good football while being on loan at Nottingham Forest.
The interest from Leeds and Antonio Conte’s side are certainly warranted, to say the least, considering how the Championship right-back has performed so far. Moreover, he has also showcased a similar level of output against tougher opposition of the likes of Arsenal and Leicester City.

The 21-year-old helped Forest knock out the Gunners and Leicester in the FA Cup this season. That is a great achievement indeed, and performing well against these Premier League sides further solidifies the quality he has shown at a young age.
Moreover, Conte could live up to his expectations and assist Spence in reaching new heights if Fabio Paratici can bring the talented star to N17. And with us holding a firm position in the race, that certainly seems to be a possibility if we can take advantage of the current circumstances. Let’s hope to see a great outcome regarding our pursuit at the end of this term.
