Tottenham Hotspur propose an offer to land Barcelona star Memphis Depay next summer
According to transfer insider Gerard Romero on Twitch via Barca Universal (h/t The Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur have proposed an offer to facilitate a move for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay in the upcoming summer transfer window. He moved to Camp Nou at the start of this season, and it seems that an exit may be on the cards under the right circumstances.
Barca signed Depay on a free transfer last summer after his contract with Olympique Lyonnais expired. The attacker had penned a two year deal with them which means that he will enter the final year of his current offer at the end of this campaign. Tottenham are looking to take advantage of this situation and bring him to the N17 next term.
Sporting director Fabio Paratici has made early approaches to make a case for Spurs as they want to pip the competition to the Dutchman as early as possible. Depay could be tempted to leave the Catalans, having fallen down the pecking order due to the January signings. The same can be said for the La Liga side themselves as they could part ways with him to help with their financially stricken situation.
Is Depay a good option?
The 28-year-old is most notably known in the Premier League for his disappointing spell with Manchester United under Louis van Gaal. That being said, he has turned a new leaf since then, having impressed with his displays at Olympique Lyon. That prompted the Blaugrana side to purchase him in the first place to compensate for Lionel Messi’s departure last summer.
The La Liga forward started really well for his side, spearheading the attack single-handedly at times. However, he endured a rough phase around the time when Ronald Koeman was sacked by Joan Laporta. Following Xavi Hernandez’s arrival, the attacker has struggled with both form and injuries.
January arrivals like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran Torres made life difficult for Depay due to the increased competition. He has fallen down the pecking order as a result which we could take advantage of and convince him to join the project we are building under Antonio Conte.
It would not be easy as the Dutch international is determined to fight for a spot at Camp Nou. That being said, we can use the La Liga club’s financial crisis to push for a move next summer. Having scored ten goals alongside two assists this season from 27 matches across all competitions, he would be a wonderful addition to the squad.

Moreover, if Paratici can sign someone like Depay, it would also send a message to Conte and Harry Kane about our ambitions moving forward. That could help us to convince them of our plans to pledge their future prospects with us. But it remains to be seen if that will be the case or not in the coming months ahead of next summer.
Nevertheless, Depay can be considered a necessity since we do not have any backup options for Kane in the squad. As such, it is good to see that we are making an early move after the mistakes we made in January by leaving things so late in the transfer window.
