David Ginola compares Tottenham Hotspur superstar Harry Kane to Diego Maradona following the 5-1 rout of Newcastle United

Former Tottenham Hotspur ace David Ginola has compared Harry Kane to football legend Diego Maradona after Spurs beat Newcastle United 5-1 in the Premier League. The former winger, who played for the North London club between 1997 and 2000, surely would have raised some eyebrows with this claim.

Kane was once again in on the goal involvements after he set up Matt Doherty with a brilliant cross to make it 2-1 in the league fixture. That goal helped Antonio Conte’s side to open the floodgates soon after the halftime break. While the striker failed to add a goal to his name, his display was once again exceptional earning plaudits from elsewhere.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game (h/t Metro), Ginola joined in on the act and perhaps he may have taken it a bit too far for some. However, the gist of what he expressed does make sense as the former attacker has mentioned that Kane is similar to how Maradona had played in the past.

“The new playmaker at Spurs is Harry Kane. I told you – Harry Kane, the playmaker, the number 10, he’s like Maradona now. He’s playing in the middle of the park, long balls, short balls, scoring, assisting, wow. This is a new Harry Kane.”

Deserved praise for Kane!

Before hitting back on Ginola’s claim, the true meaning of his words must be taken into consideration. He was not making a direct like to like comparison of their quality but rather simply focusing on the similarities and the involvements in their style of play.

Maradona is well known for influencing his team’s play in various areas of the pitch. Similarly, Kane has developed his game to such a level that he is now able to create opportunities for others while finishing off chances himself as well.

That makes the England captain a better and more complete player overall which is the reason for the comparison with one of the all-time greats in football. His sublime cross that created Doherty’s goal captures that into stats, but his influence extends to more areas rather than just assists.

Kane’s assists against Newcastle saw him increase his tally to seven this season from 42 matches across all competitions so far. He also has 22 goals to his name, which is a great return when compared to the struggles he underwent at the start of this campaign.

We are confident that the 28-year-old can continue playing in this manner for the remainder of this campaign. That would ensure that we have the maximum chances of achieving Champions League qualification for the next term. Whether that will happen or not remains to be seen.
