Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham Hotspur maintain interest in Villarreal star Pau Torres
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have maintained their interest in Villarreal star Pau Torres ahead of this summer. The latter has been in fine form this season as well, following up from his impressive Euro 2020 campaign.
Tottenham are searching the transfer market for a left-sided central defender to add to their ranks after this term. They want to provide more competition to Ben Davies in that role and are keeping tabs on Torres as a result. However, they will need to deal with Manchester United, who are also keen to sign the La Liga ace.
Speaking on the Que Golazo YouTube channel (h/t Football.London), Romano has confirmed that Spurs are currently monitoring Torres ahead of a potential move this summer. The latter was a target for them last summer, and he was close to joining them before tracking back on his stance to play Champions League football with his current club.
“Tottenham wanted him one year ago and he was close to joining Tottenham then he decided to stay at Villarreal to play Champions League football which was something historical, but now Tottenham are still following him.”
Torres, a summer arrival?
Davies has done quite well deputising as a left-sided centre-back even though he is naturally a full-back. There were concerns within the fanbase when Antonio Conte initially started using him in that role despite the defender having experience playing in that position for the national team.
The supporters cannot be blamed for their worries either, as playing week in and week out in the Premier League is a completely different challenge indeed. However, the Welshman has proven his worth with his excellent performances and has made a claim for himself.
However, it would still be best if we would have a natural option in that role who could challenge for the starting spot. Torres can be that man looking at how influential he has been for Unai Emery’s side and Luis Enrique’s Spain national team.
Perhaps, the North Londoners could finally get their hands on their long term target, although the interest from Man United should keep us on our toes. Then again, one could say how the prospect of playing at N17 is currently more attractive than a move to Old Trafford. After all, we are in a far better state than them at this moment.

Not to mention, since we were close to signing the 25-year-old centre-back last summer, one could say that could potentially play a role in giving us a head start ahead of our competitors. Then again, that is still an unknown factor, so we have to wait and see how this situation would pan out as the summer transfer window draws close.
