Tottenham Hotspur dealt blow as Manchester City lead Matheus Nunes transfer race

According to CM Journal (h/t The Sun), Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a blow as Manchester City are currently in the lead to sign Matheus Nunes in a summer transfer move. He has earned quite a name for himself over the past few seasons, especially after helping Sporting to win the Primeira Liga title last term.

Pep Guardiola is keen to sign a midfielder at the end of this campaign, with Fernandinho looking set to leave them this summer. Man City have turned their attention towards Nunes as a result and have identified him as a suitable target. What’s more, they are stated to be the favourites to secure his signature after this season.

The Citizens are currently planning to table a £34million transfer bid for the Brazilian’s signature. However, it is claimed that they would formally make the offer at the end of the current campaign. Tottenham are handed a tough set of cards following this update if they are eager to sign him moving forward.

Can Spurs see off Man City challenge?

The North Londoners’ depth in midfield would be put to a serious test next term, considering how they will engage in several different competitions at once. That is especially the case if they can qualify for the Champions League, which remains a possibility after the recent derby victory.

As such, having just four midfielders may not be wise going into the next campaign from Antonio Conte’s side. One could say Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele could add to the options, but doubts can be raised about their future since they were allowed to leave in January in the first place.

Hence, signing Nunes can be considered a priority if there are plans to challenge for winning silverware. That means we must do our best to pip Guardiola’s team, who are currently in the lead. Even if that objective is achieved, Newcastle United remains another obstacle as they have also shown an interest in signing him.

The Manchester club would undoubtedly be a stern challenge that we have to overcome to get our hands on the 23-year-old. They are a strong side financially and in sporting terms as well, which shows the steep hill that we have to climb to win this transfer race.

Since we already know that they are planning to make a bid, Fabio Paratici must plan accordingly and take appropriate actions to put us into contention. The fans should hope that the Mancunians won’t be able to flex their financial muscle, especially after their transfer business with Erling Haaland.
