Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni among top left centre-back targets for Tottenham Hotspur

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni is one of the top left centre-back targets for Tottenham Hotspur this summer. He has once again been immense this season, building on the improvements he had shown in the previous campaign.

Tottenham are set to back Antonio Conte in the summer transfer window to bolster their ranks for the current project. With Champions League football firmly in their grasp, albeit not confirmed just yet, they are given more ways to attract top-notch players across the world. Bastoni is one such target who they hope to add to their squad after this term.

Spurs are looking to strengthen their left central defensive role ahead of the next season. Ben Davies is currently plying his trade in that position, but he is not a natural centre-back. Hence, they have identified Bastoni as an option, with Josko Gvardiol of RB Leipzig being alongside him on the shortlist.

Can Spurs sign Bastoni?

When Conte initially started using Davies as a make-shift left centre-half, no one would have expected the Welsh defender to perform his task quite well so far. After all, he has been so good that the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon have failed to overthrow him despite being natural centre-backs.

Despite that, there have been times when Davies not being a natural option has affected us during matches as he is a left-back by trade. Then again, his solid performances are down to how he has played as a central defender occasionally for his national team.

As such, it is understandable why the North London side has shortlisted some options to add to their choices on the left-hand side of the back three. Bastoni is one of the best in his role in the Serie A, and Conte has experience working with him during their time together at Giuseppe Meazza.

The Nerazzurri have become genuine title contenders in recent years, so raiding them for the Italian international would not be an easy task indeed. Then again, the fans are hoping that the prospect of playing in the Premier League under Conte coupled with Champions League football would be enough to convince him of a move.

Moreover, moving to N17 and being one of the main cogs of a new project could provide the 23-year-old defender with a fresh challenge as well. However, it is still early days at this point and it remains to be seen whether he or his club would entertain offers regarding a potential move.

Fortunately, we also have Gvardiol as an option which does give us security in case we lose out on one of the targets. Whether we can sign either of the defenders or not would need to be seen as the summer transfer window is on the horizon.

Signing a central defender seems important right now. Conte has come in and employed a system where there are three central defenders- thus requiring depth in that area. Toby Alderweireld also departed last summer and we can do with a top-quality, experienced defender to lead the line for us going forward.
