Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur show interest to sign Stade Rennes striker Martin Terrier
According to French outlet Footmercato (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur have expressed their interest in signing Stade Rennes forward Martin Terrier in the summer transfer window. He has been quite impressive in Ligue 1 this season, holding the third position in the top-scorers chart behind Kylian Mbappe and Wissam Ben Yedder.
Tottenham are searching the market for a backup striker to Harry Kane as they look to back Antonio Conte moving forward. They have identified Terrier as a potential option and are “very fond” of the player following his excellent displays in France so far. They have contacted him as a result and have even made an offer ahead of a move.
Terrier has a contract with Rennes until 2025, which could make things difficult for Spurs when facilitating a transfer. Then again, the prospect of playing in the Premier League coupled with Conte’s presence could provide them with enough chances to prise the Frenchman away after this term.
Who is Martin Terrier?
The 25-year-old is primarily a left-winger by trade, although he has shown this campaign his ability to play equally well as a lone striker. Furthermore, he is also versatile enough to play on the right-wing and even as a number ten if required. That quality of his will be a valuable asset for Conte if he wants to make tweaks as needed.
The Ligue ace has been quite prolific this term, having scored 21 goals and assisted seven times from 45 matches across all competitions. That is a great return indeed, and signing him would be a massive boost for the North Londoners as they have often struggled to find a suitable backup option for Kane.
The likes of Fernando Llorente, Vincent Janssen and Carlos Vinicius have been tried to be used in that role but have often failed to provide the required output. Perhaps, Terrier could finally be the man who could meet our needs and offer solid competition and/or backup to our English talisman.
Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura, of course, have played down the middle at times when we have needed someone to deputise for Kane. But Terrier has arguably shown that he can play comfortably down the middle on a more regular basis.
Now, it remains to be seen how the French club or Terrier himself will respond to our apparent proposal in the coming days. The supporters would be hoping that the London based club could get the desired target as it is essential to have a reliable backup option from the next term onwards.
That is especially the case if Champions League football is also a factor moving into the next season which is a possibility as we are in the driving seat to finish in the top four spots. With several competitions to play for in the next campaign, we cannot afford to have only Kane as the centre-forward option in our ranks.

Hence, the fans would want Fabio Paratici to do his best to complete a transfer for Terrier, but whether a move can be finalised or not would only be known in due time. Even if we can’t get him on board, the club would be wise to assess other targets.
