Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur rival Manchester United for Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar
According to the Italian news outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur are rivalling Manchester United for the services of Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar in the summer transfer window. He has been the backbone of his side’s defence over the years and has played a major part in their recent success.
Skriniar is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in Serie A at this moment, which has resulted in interest from several major Premier League clubs. Tottenham and Man United are among those, with Chelsea also joining them in the transfer race. All of them are actively vying to add him to their ranks as they look to rebuild their respective backlines.
However, Inter have recognised the threat with the Slovakian international being set to enter the final year of his current contract this summer. They are eager to tie him down on a new deal and could even decide to sacrifice Stefan de Vrij, whose contract also expires in 2023, to secure Skriniar’s future.
Can Spurs pull it off?
The defence is an area that could use some additions in the summer transfer window. The North London side would need to have a good blend of depth and quality in their ranks to provide Antonio Conte with adequate choices if there are plans to raise a challenge to win silverware in the future.
The trio of Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies form our current starting lineup, but one could say how the latter duo could be upgraded with a better option. Skriniar is one such target who could significantly boost the backline with his ability to lead the backline and get the best out of his teammates.
The Nerazzurri could pose trouble in our pursuit as they are trying to tie down Skriniar on a new deal worth €4.5million-plus bonuses at first, which will exceed €5million in the coming years. The Tottenham supporters would hope that the prospect of reuniting with Conte would convince the Serie A defender not to accept Inter’s offer.
Should that happen, Spurs would have a major opportunity in their hands to secure the Slovakian’s services on a cut-price deal. Furthermore, even if Simone Inzaghi’s side are unwilling to let him go this summer, we could still get our hands on him for free at the end of the next term.

The Red Devils are another obstacle that we need to overcome, although we are currently in a better situation than them at this moment. The Blues, meanwhile, are going through a bit of a rough phase as well with their change in ownership and the defensive exodus that is set to take place after this campaign.
Perhaps, the stability in our team, likely Champions League football and reunion with Conte, could give us enough of an edge to convince Skriniar regarding a move. Whether that will happen, though, remains to be seen.
