Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur rival Inter Milan to sign Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku
According to the Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport [Print Edition] via Sport Witness, as quoted by Absolute Chelsea on Twitter (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur will battle it out with Inter Milan to sign Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku ahead of the summer transfer window. His time at Stamford Bridge has been quite disappointing, which has seen his future get surrounded by uncertainty.
Inter are willing to re-sign Lukaku after selling him to the Blues last summer. However, Tottenham have supposedly entered the race to secure his signature and are posing trouble for them right now. The English club “have the money” to meet the expenses involved in a potential move, putting them in contention in this pursuit.
However, Antonio Conte is the major roadblock for the Nerazzurri right now, having considered the Belgian as a “pivotal player”. Furthermore, the striker is Conte’s “number one target” at this instant which has seen the boss stand “between Lukaku and Inter” as of now.
Does not make any sense
It is highly advisable that this piece of information is taken with a pinch of salt, as it does not make sense for Conte to make Lukaku his priority target. After all, there are other areas in our squad, like centre-back, for example, that must desperately be reinforced this summer, casting doubts on this update.
Moreover, the ever-reliable Dan Kilpatrick of Evening Standard stated last month that Harry Kane is open to extending his current contract with Spurs. If that is the case, then we do not need another high profile striker as Conte employs a three-man frontline, unlike what he had done at Giuseppe Meazza.
It would not make sense for the Italian boss to restructure the attack when the trio of Kane, Son Heung-Min and Dejan Kulusevski has done wonders for us so far. Lukaku has no spot for us in the team as he is unlikely to accept a bit-part role as a backup striker anyway.
Furthermore, signing Lukaku may not come cheap given he is Chelsea’s record signing. It would be rather unrealistic to expect the Blues to sell him on the cheap given he has spent just one year at the Bridge since his move from Serie A.
If we are targeting a striker this summer, it would probably be someone more suited to be played as a squad player. After all, Kane does not have any backup option in our ranks at this moment, which calls for the need to reinforce the role ahead of the next campaign.

Those equations change if we assume Conte wants someone to pair up with Kane. But then it raises the question of what happens with Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski- two of our in-form attackers. The Swede is expected to join Spurs permanently this summer.
