Louis van Gaal advices Steven Bergwijn to leave Tottenham Hotspur and join Ajax
While speaking in an interview as quoted by the Mirror, Netherlands national team manager Louis van Gaal has given some crucial advice to Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Bergwijn is one of the Tottenham Hotspur players who might be on his way out this summer. Ajax are one club making a push to sign the 24-year-old as he continues to struggle for regular starts at N17.
The Eredivisie champions have even seemingly had a bid turned down as Tottenham are unwilling to let him leave for under €25m. And that only makes sense, given Bergwijn’s age and ability.
Regardless of whether the two clubs are able to reach an agreement, one individual advises Bergwijn to depart as soon as possible. Louis van Gaal, the Dutch manager, has advised the winger to join Ajax in order to clinch his place in the FIFA World Cup later this year.
“I want him (Bergwijn) to go to Ajax as soon as possible. Tottenham don’t give him enough playing minutes and that is unbelievable when you see his qualities.”
Bergwijn has failed to live up to the £26.5 million price tag Spurs paid to PSV Eindhoven when he moved to north London two years ago. As a result, the winger isn’t getting much playing time under Antonio Conte.
With the World Cup just around the way, Bergwijn may wish to leave in order to prepare for the event, which the Netherlands expect to win.
Should Tottenham let Bergwijn leave?
For Spurs, the Dutchman has put in a number of excellent displays. Without a question, the 24-year-old is gifted. His talents, however, may not be the ideal fit for Antonio Conte’s ambitions at this time.
Despite the fact that Tottenham needed a striker to relieve the pressure on Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, the Italian manager does not start Bergwijn as much as one might expect.
In such a case, the Dutchman is likely to exert pressure on the board to allow him to go. If he goes during the summer window then the club would be wise to search for an attacker who is happy being a squad player, since his departure would just serve to underline the attack’s lack of depth.
