Tottenham Hotspur target Josko Gvardiol set to sign new RB Leipzig deal

RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol is set to agree to a new deal with the Bundesliga side amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur, according to Sportske (h/t football.london). The Croatian’s new deal is set to include a release clause worth £43 million.

Gvardiol has been linked with a move to London, with rivals Chelsea also in the race for the 20-year-old’s signature. Spurs were one of the sides vying for the young centre-back’s signing, according to Nabil Djellit via GFFN (h/t football.london).

Gvardiol would fit right in at Spurs

In his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Antonio Conte has opted to play with a makeshift back three, including Ben Davies. A natural left-back, the Welshman has played most of his football at centre-back under the Italian manager.

If the North London side were to sign the 20-year-old, it would only make sense that Conte would have him take Davies’ position.

The left-footed Croatian would have been a great addition to the side if he had signed. Considered comfortable on the ball and having the ability to play out from the back, Gvardiol could have provided the team with a different dynamic.

Our Italian boss doesn’t seem to trust the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga in the defence.

Cristian Romero and Eric Dier have had brilliant seasons and were central to Spurs’ Champions League qualification. But in his debut season, the Argentinian had picked up a few injuries and missed 22 games.

Considering our defensive vulnerabilities, if Gvardiol had signed for the Lilywhites this summer, our backline would’ve got the necessary qualifications to remain solid in the upcoming campaign.

More Tottenham Hotspur New

It remains to be seen whether other top European teams, including Spurs, lock horns once again next summer, keeping in mind the reasonable release clause the Croatian defender will have in his new contract.
