Transfer News: Atletico Madrid keen on signing out-of-favour Tottenham Hotspur full-back Emerson Royal
Emerson Royal’s future at Tottenham Hotspur has been in doubt for a while, and it seems like Atletico Madrid are keen on offering the Brazilian a way out of North London.
The 23-year-old joined from Barcelona only one year ago but has failed to convince Antonio Conte despite making 44 appearances across all competitions last term.
The resurgence of Matt Doherty has also contributed to Royal’s relegation to the bench and after only one season, a move back to Spain could be on the cards. Diego Simeone’s side is apparently open to taking that risk.
According to Daily Mail, Atletico are interested in bringing Emerson to the Wanda Metropolitano, but only on an initial loan deal to see if the move will work out. Spurs on the other hand, would prefer a permanent transfer to help fund their transfer activity.
That could prove to be a major stumbling block, given Atletico’s financial troubles which are preventing them currently from registering new signing Axel Witsel, who is set to arrive on a free following his Borussia Dortmund release.
Spurs are closing in on a loan deal for Royal’s former Barca teammate, Clement Lenglet. According to Fabrizio Romano, negotiations are advanced and final details are being discussed.
A return to Spain could help revitalise Emerson Royal’s career
The Brazilian full-back, for all his talent, hasn’t come close to meeting anyone’s expectations. Maybe it’s the new environment in a new country, or the adaptability issues that a move to the Premier League brings, or both.
Emerson could really benefit from a return to Spain, and Atletico could prove to be the perfect destination for him. Should he find his feet again, Royal could really raise his currently depleted stock exponentially.

However, a deal is far from done. Atletico need to sort their finances out first, before attempting a formal offer. For the Lilywhites, it’s best if they could offload him permanently or at least ask Los Colchoneros to have an obligation, rather than an option, to buy.
That is, if Conte doesn’t believe Emerson is expendable at Spurs. Most of Tottenham’s fans would certainly think so.
