Gareth Southgate told to ease goal scoring burden on Tottenham ace Harry Kane

According to The Mirror, England legend, Sir Geoff Hurst believes that Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions have what it takes to lift the World Cup in Qatar this November but believes they must reduce the goal-scoring burden on Tottenham ace Harry Kane.

The hat-trick hero of England’s 1966 World Cup triumph, believes in the current team but has expressed concern. He believes all players must share the burden of scoring and not over-rely on captain Kane to find the back of the net.

“At major tournaments like the World Cup, it’s beneficial if you’ve got a number of players who can score goals. You could argue we may be a bit too reliant on Kane.”

It is no secret that Kane is the centre point when England plays. A prolific goal scorer he has scored 50 goals for the Three Lions in 73 appearances. He is England’s second-highest goal-scorer, trailing record holder Wayne Rooney by a mere three goals.

Kane, meanwhile, will hope that he can lead his country to the ultimate glory by lifting the coveted World Cup in Qatar in November and end the nation’s 56-year wait for a major trophy.

It’s finally coming home?

The Spurs ace was in fine form last season as he ended the campaign with 17 League goals and nine assists in 37 appearances, as he helped his club Tottenham Hotspur clinch a fourth-place finish on the last day of the season.

Not only this, he scored back-to-back first-half hat-tricks against Albania and San Marino to help secure England’s qualification for the World Cup in November. He was again the joint top-scorer in the World Cup Qualification for Europe netting 12 goals in eight games.

The Englishman captained England in the last World Cup too where he won the golden boot for being the tournament’s top goal-scorer and leading his side to a fourth-place finish, their highest since 1990. He also led his country to the final of the UEFA Euro 2020 where they finished as runners-up.

Sir Hurst believes that England’s poor performance in the UEFA Nations League does not reflect the actual quality of the team. He rather believes that manager Gareth Southgate was looking to play as many players as he could, in preparation for the upcoming World Cup.

However, Sir Hurst’s words could come as an early warning to Southgate, who will be hoping to lead his side to glory. Whether the England boss heeds such advice is yet to be seen.
