Clement Lenglet is close to joining Tottenham Hotspur as agreement with Barcelona being finalised

It’s just a matter of time before Clement Lenglet is announced as a new Tottenham Hotspur signing from Barcelona, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

The North London club is still working on certain details, but the French centre-back’s loan deal is said to be close to being agreed upon by the two clubs. The 27-year-old has already accepted terms with Spurs and it’s considered a matter of final steps now.

Lenglet’s possible arrival will see Antonio Conte have a natural left-footed defender. Currently, Ben Davies has been preferred by the Italian to cover the left-hand side of the defence. While the Welshman has done a good job, fans feel an out-and-out centre-back will be able to cover up more threats.

The 25-year-old is an experienced centre-back, having played 314 official games in his club career. The French international also has 15 caps for his national side. In his four years in Barcelona, the defender has played 158 games for the Blaugrana.

With Champions League football at the N17 to look forward to next season, Lenglet’s experience of playing in big games is something fans will look forward to. The ambition of the club with the recent signings is evident and the French defender is someone Conte now has in his side.

Lenglet’s spot not guaranteed?

Clement Lenglet will have a lot of competition at Spurs.

But a spot in the team is something that isn’t guaranteed. How Conte lines up and uses Davies next season is yet to be seen. The Welsh left-back played as a centre-back under the Italian and was a constant fixture in the team.

Eric Dier has come into his own and has been one of the leaders in the backline. He’s been back to his best after faltering a couple of seasons ago. The 28-year-old played 40 games for Spurs last season.

Fans haven’t been able to see much of Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez regularly due to injuries. But the duo have been solid, especially the former, whenever they’ve been fit to represent the side. Conte will hope they can stay fit through the next season and showcase their talent to a greater extent.

But then again, it would be a surprise to see Lenglet swap Barcelona for the Lilywhites if he wasn’t going to be an important first-team player here. One thing is for sure- this is a signing that will add depth to our backline, which becomes even more necessary when Conte plays three centre-backs in his starting XI.
