Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur table a bid to Barcelona for Memphis Depay
According to Spanish outlet Sport (h/t the Sun), Tottenham Hotspur has made Barcelona an offer of £14 million for Memphis Depay, which is short of the £17million valuation placed on the versatile attacker.
After a successful tenure with Lyon, Memphis Depay completed a dream move last summer by signing for Barcelona on a free transfer. The Dutch international, however, had a wildly inconsistent season at Camp Nou after a promising start, especially failing to perform well in the UEFA Champions League.
In spite of this, the 28-year-old finished his first season with Barcelona as the team’s leading scorer, tallying 13 goals in 37 games across all competitions.
Depay is seemingly not at Camp Nou as a result of Raphinha’s acquisition and Ousmane Dembele’s two-year contract extension with Barcelona. The Catalan team made him available in the transfer window recently.
With six acquisitions made so far this summer, Spurs have been very active in the market. Djed Spence is set to be the latest player to join the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Antonio Conte is having a successful transfer window as he prepares for his first full season with the north London club. Tottenham may yet make a move during the summer transfer window, though, as Depay has caught their attention as a potential transfer target for the 2022–23 season.
Conte appears to be looking for more high-calibre options for his frontline even if Richarlison has already been added by the Spurs to strengthen their scoring unit.
It seems Tottenham have tabled a £14 million bid for Depay. Whether that entices Barca into selling him remains to be seen. Having flopped at Manchester United, Depay wouldn’t have good memories of his time in England.
It is believed that Depay does not want to move to the Premier League. Additionally, the 28-year-old has made it clear that he intends to stay at Camp Nou after the summer transfer market closes.

The 28-year-old will also encounter huge competition for a starting position at Spurs if he signs. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are already two of the top forwards for the North London team. Richarlison, Ivan Perisic, and Dejan Kulusevski were all added to the team under Conte.
