Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur eye shock move for Chelsea star Trevoh Chalobah

According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah this summer.

This is a sensational piece of news for several reasons. Chelsea are already lagging behind in the defensive department after Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leaving the club for nothing to seal moves to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

Secondly, the rivalry between the two clubs is well known. It isn’t ridiculous to suggest that the Blues would want to strengthen their arch-rivals Spurs by giving them one of the best young players and vice versa.

Moreover, Chalobah is arguably one of Chelsea’s future stars. Just 21, there is a feeling that he can be a leader of the backline in the years to come, especially with Thiago Silva (37) and Kalidou Koulibaly (31) not getting any younger.

Then again, there is the question of what the player wants. It is believed that Chalobah could seek a move away on a temporary or permanent basis as he fears 21-year-old Wesley Fofana’s potential arrival from Leicester City could knock him down the pecking order.

Spurs, hence, would be smart if they can somehow pull this move off. However, as good as Chalobah may be, some fans would feel that what the club now needs is an experienced leader of the backline- someone in the ilk of Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool.

A defender with experience and that aura of invincibility at the back that can take us from being challengers to winners is certainly something that can benefit the club. Does Chalobah offer that? Arguably not yet.

More Tottenham News:

Cristian Romero, who is of the same age as Chalobah (23), is doing a solid job for us in the backline. And as good as Ben Davies has been as a left-sided centre-back, it does seem like a makeshift arrangement that we can upgrade on.
