Transfer News: Trevoh Chalobah is set to stay at Chelsea amid Tottenham Hotspur interest
According to Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t Yahoo Sport), Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah is now set to stay at the west London club. This will come as a disappointment to Tottenham Hotspur, who were interested in the defender.
Antonio Conte has had a very fruitful summer transfer window. He has added seven new faces to his senior squad and was looking to add more.
Chalobah was of interest to Spurs as Conte looked to add more depth to his defence for the long season ahead. But, now that seems very unlikely to happen as the 23-year-old is set to stay at Chelsea.
The former England Under-21 international had fears that he would be demoted further down the pecking order should his club bring in Wesley Fofana. The Blues are said to have agreed to terms for Fofana, and Chalobah’s worst fears are now likely to come true.
Fofana’s arrival will push the 23-year-old down the order, but now it looks like he will stay back and fight for his place. The centre-back showed his potential last season when he impressed everyone with his performances.
He made 30 appearances for the Blues in all competitions last season and scored four goals in the process. Such an attacking centre-back is someone Conte likes to have in his squad. Also, his arrival would help boost the English quota on the Spurs’ roster.
Currently, Davinson Sanchez and Clement Lenglet provide back-up to the main three centre-backs. But adding one more could only help the club. Apart from the league, Spurs also have the Champions League to play in.
And because of the World Cup in November, the schedule for next month is very hectic. Spurs will play a game every mid-week from next week. Depth will play a very important part in this season.

It remains to be seen if Conte adds any other new defence to his squad. Less than a week remains before the transfer window slams shut and Conte and co will be wise to act fast to bring in any new player.
