Tottenham Hotspur have the necessary infrastructure to install new semi-automated technology
The Premier League is expected to push to use the semi-automated offside system for next season and Tottenham Hotspur have the basic infrastructure to install the new technology, as per The Times (Subscription Required).
Nearly half of the 20 teams in the Premier League-those in the Champions League this season plus Arsenal, Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Southampton and Nottingham Forest-have the basic infrastructure required to install the extra cameras.
This new system is currently in use in the Champions League this season and one could say it has been a success. It is seen as a huge improvement on the existing VAR system.
Currently, the offside lines are drawn manually by the VAR technician. It not only leads to delay but also controversies. Hardly a week goes by in the Premier League when VAR was not at fault for some team.
But with the new system this won’t be the case. The AI will immediately send an alert to the VAR when a player is offside. This will not only save time, but also increases the chance of a correct decision.
This semi-automated system is to be used in this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November, after completing successful trials. Other leagues are also looking at this technology, with Serie A testing it on a non-live basis.
However, the new technology is a bit expensive. The advantages far outweigh the cost, as the new system is much quicker and more accurate than the one currently in use. It remains to be seen if the cost plays a hindrance to adopting this technology.

The 20 clubs are expected to wait until after the World Cup before voting on the system. Fans will hope that such a better technology will reduce the controversies which the current one causes every week.
