Antonio Conte praises Matt Doherty in Tottenham Hotspur’s win against Everton
Speaking in the post-match press conference following Tottenham Hotspur’s win against Everton as quoted by Football. London, Spurs boss Antonio Conte praises Irish wing-back Matt Doherty for his impressive showing in the Lilywhites’ 2-0 win against the Toffees.
Spurs managed to beat Frank Lampard’s side 2-0 in the PL last night, with Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg scoring for the North London club. It was yet another impressive showing for Antonio Conte’s side.
In the absence of Emerson Royal who is missing Spurs’ Premier League games due to a suspension, Conte trusted Doherty in the role after his impressive display against Brighton last week.
It’s fair to say that the 30-year-old full-back did himself absolutely no harm by the display he put in last night. Doherty was one of Tottenham’s most impressive players on the pitch and showed a lot of composure.
Conte did not fail to recognize the player’s abilities and the Italian tactician said that he finally saw the Doherty of last year. The form comes at a good time too, considering Emerson’s absence.
“I’m really happy for Matthew. He played a good game against Brighton but today he was better. Today I saw Matt Doherty of last season. I said to him ‘now finally you are the player I know!”
The result puts Tottenham level on points with Manchester City and just one point behind Arsenal, albeit having played a game more. The two teams will feel this pressure when they play their games today.
Spurs came into this game expecting a victory and anything other than that would have been a disappointment. Conte would have been worried about the score at 0-0 at half-time but the Italian’s team stepped up.
Tottenham will be looking to keep this good momentum going when they take on Manchester United in the Premier League next. It will not be an easy match by any means but Conte will know that his team must win.
