Harry Kane opens up on penalty mind-games with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in Tottenham Hotspur win

Tottenham Hotspur were having a tough time breaking down Everton until a Harry Kane penalty past Jordan Pickford gave Spurs the lead they were crying out for.

Kane won the penalty a few minutes before the hour mark after he was clearly tripped by a diving Pickford in front of him. When he stepped up to the spot, he had the experience of taking penalties against the goalie in the England camp.

Hence, some would think that it would give him an edge in such a scenario. However, it was perhaps more in Pickford’s favour, who could have had a better understanding of Kane’s thinking process and where he would shoot.

He probably did. The former Sunderland goalkeeper, after all, dived the right way (to his right), but the penalty was so well struck and so powerfully hit, that he stood no chance.

Kane skied the last pen he took, which came in our 3-2 win against Eintracht Frankfurt at N17 in an important UEFA Champions League group stage. Hence, this one was important for Kane to get his confidence back.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Kane told Sky Sports (h/t BBC):

“He made a couple of good saves and I snuck the penalty past him. Happy to get on the scoresheet again; it has been a tough week with loads of game”

This was a brilliant win capped off by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s 86th-minute goal which was assisted by Rodrigo Bentancur from out wide. These two tireless runners deserved this moment after the amount of work they put in midfield.

For Kane, it’s turning out to be a great season. He has scored 10 goals in 14 games across competitions and this was his third penalty goal of the season. Up next is a daunting task to face Manchester United at Old Trafford later this week.
