Tottenham Hotspur Harry Kane labelled “King of the Divers” by Chris Sutton after Everton win

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has labelled Harry Kane as the ‘King of the Divers’ for his antics in Tottenham Hotspur’s win against Everton at N17 on Saturday.

Kane won a penalty after he collided with a diving Jordan Pickford a few minutes before the hour mark in the game. The incident has attracted criticism towards the England international for the way he won the penalty.

There was definite contact from the English goalkeeper but Sutton, speaking on BBC 5 Live (h/t Liverpool Echo) after the full-time whistle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, said:

“I think Harry Kane is the King of the Divers, isn’t he? He initiated the contact, he was already on his way down with Jordan Pickford. We’ve seen it time and time again. Listen, I get it, he’s the England captain, but he’s a diver. I think Everton were hard done by.”

If Sutton feels comfortable labelling Kane as a ‘diver’, then it won’t be unfair if Tottenham fans accuse him of bias here. Given that he is a former Chelsea player, one can understand if he doesn’t have a soft spot for Spurs.

Calling someone a diver, that too on national media isn’t a very good look on an acclaimed pundit like him. The referee saw the incident and so did VAR.

The penalty stood and it was expertly dispatched by our number 10. As for the way he went down, there was contact – which impedes him from getting to the ball.

Even if his reaction was exaggerated, it doesn’t stop it from being a penalty. Spurs scored another goal in the game via Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg later in the game to win 2-0 – a deserved three points for sure.
