Confirmed: Tottenham Hotspur duo Son Heung-min and Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or rankings
Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane has been ranked 21st in the 2022 Ballon d’Or rankings. He is the highest-ranked player from England, ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden, who are both tied at 22nd (h/t Evening Standard).
Son Heung-min, meanwhile, finishes in 11th position – his highest-ever finish in the award’s history. He could be behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who is expected to finish in the top 10. The two shared the Premier League Golden Boot last season.
It remains to be seen who actually lifts the award as it is set to be announced later tonight. Karim Benzema is perhaps the favourite after an iconic last 12 months with Real Madrid.
Kane and Son were always going to finish in the top 25 given the season that they had with us last time out. The England international scored 27 goals and provided 10 assists in a season where we finished fourth in the league.
Son, meanwhile, scored 24 times and provided 10 assists in 45 games across competitions for us. A Spurs player has shared the podium at the award just once, with Jimmy Greaves doing so in 1963 when he finished third behind Giani Rivera and winner Lev Yashin.
Jurgen Klinsmann finished second in 1995 when he was bought by Bayern Munich midway through the 1194-95 campaign from Tottenham. Perhaps we can take a little credit for the German’s second-place finish then.
For Kane and Son, these individual awards would probably not mean a lot until they win something big with the club. As much as individual performances matter for the Ballon d’Or, team trophies arguably also play a role.

So, for one of our own players to get their hands on the Golden trophy, perhaps trophies will matter. Who knows, a couple of trophies this season and Kane breaks the top 3 next year… He has, after all, bagged 10 goals in 14 appearances across competitions this campaign.
