Gary Lineker slams VAR for ruling out Tottenham Hotspur’s winner against Sporting CP
Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker has slammed VAR for ruling out Spurs’ winner against Sporting Lisbon last time out.
Spurs went into the game needing a win to secure their place in the round of 16 for this season’s UEFA Champions League. However, things did not go according to plan.
Marcus Edwards, a former Tottenham player gave the Portuguese side the lead when his shot from outside the box beat Hugo Lloris in goal. Rodrigo Bentancur then equalised for his side from a corner and gave his side hope of ending the night with a win.
Harry Kane thought he had won it for his side when he latched onto a ball from Emerson Royal, which deflected off a Sporting defender. The referee awarded the goal and Spurs players and coaching staff were over the moon.
But, a check with VAR ruled the goal as offside and the game ended 1-1. Lineker took to Twitter to react to the decision. To say he had a vocal opinion wouldn’t be amiss.
“Ridiculous. I hate the way VAR is being used.”

Spurs players could believe what they had seen. Antonio Conte saw a red card after his furious reaction to the goal being disallowed was directed at the referee. The Tottenham boss will now be in the stands for the game against Marseille this Tuesday.
