Bryan Gil urged to leave Tottenham Hotspur in January transfer window to get playing time

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has told Bryan Gil to ‘get out’ of Spurs if he wants playing time.

The young Spanish winger was signed before the start of the 2021-22 season in a deal that also saw Erik Lamela swap places and join Sevilla. However, he has struggled for playing time.

Gil was loaned out to Valencia in the January transfer window and was close to rejoining Los Che on a temporary basis once again before the deal fell through in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

Gil has played in just 43 minutes of competitive football this season spread across five games. He has looked good in the games that he has been substituted in but it is clear that he hasn’t done enough to impress manager Antonio Conte.

Despite Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski being sidelined with injury recently, Gil wasn’t properly trusted in the starting XI. This clearly shows that the former Inter Milan manager doesn’t trust the Spaniard to play week in, week out just yet.

Hutton exclusively told Football Insider:

“Obviously Conte has had a good look at him. He sees him every day. He looks a little bit lightweight to me for the Premier League. He can make things happen from what I have seen but is he going to work hard defensively? Is he going to get up and down the pitch? Where exactly does he fit in?”

That’s a good question. Gil doesn’t have the defensive nous to play as a wing-back but he can be a good option down the flanks where Son Heung-min and Kulusevski play in. However, Hutton doesn’t see the situation changing – not in the short-term, at least.

“I can’t see him taking a space of Richarlison, Kulusevski, Son or [Harry] Kane. I think there is a lot of people in front of him. So he is probably a player that you are looking at when it comes to January. He is going to have to get out. I do not see that game time coming at all really.”

Sound advice. Hopefully, Spurs take the full picture in mind before taking a call. Gil adds depth to our squad and is a good safety net.

But that shouldn’t come at the cost of his development. He could have been playing regular football outside N17 this season but that hasn’t happened. There’s still time to rectify that and give the youngster the minutes he needs to properly develop into a future starter for Spurs.
