Pundit explains why Antonio Conte may not approve Tottenham Hotspur signing Dejan Kulusevski permanently from Juventus

Dejan Kulusevski was signed by Tottenham Hotspur from Juventus in the January transfer window on an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy.

According to Fabrizio Romano, that option becomes an obligation if Spurs finish in the top four this season and Kulusevski makes 20 league appearances [more than 45 minutes a game] for the club.

Even if the criterion is not met, Spurs will still have the option to buy the Sweden international for €35million. It has been almost taken for granted that Spurs will make the deal permanent.

This is largely down to how crucial Kulusevski has been to Spurs’ strong finish to the 2021-22 season where they made the top four, and their sensational start to the current campaign.

Overall, he has six goals and 11 assists in 29 games across competitions for Spurs since his move from the Allianz Stadium. Now, former West Ham United star Frank McAvennie has claimed that Kulusevski’s recent injury could change things.

The Swede has been out for our last 10 games across competitions with a hamstring issue. He believes that Conte will not give the deal a green light if Kulusevski doesn’t return as the same player as he was before the fitness issue, or if he gets injured again.

He exclusively told Football Insider:

“It depends how bad his injury is. He was doing alright and now he has got an injury. No club is going to give you a contract if you might not come back the same player. I feel for him because by all accounts he was quite happy when he was playing.”

“Conte won’t authorise a permanent deal if he is not fit. So it might be a blow for him to go back to his parent club but no club is going to pay money because anything can happen. He could break down again. Conte will know what to do and will give the thumbs up or down.”

Liverpool face Tottenham Hotspur at N17 later tonight and Romano has claimed that Kulusevski will be called up for the game. It is clear that he is an important part of our time.

But the ex-Hammers star is not wrong in suggesting that the club will not just throw money at any player if he doesn’t guarantee them quality. There is always the chance that the Lilywhites smell a better deal by the end of the season and change their minds about Deki.
