Spurs Transfer News: Juventus and AS Roma keen to sign Tottenham Hotspur target Guglielmo Vicario
Juventus are looking to make a January move for Tottenham Hotspur target Guglielmo Vicario to replace Wojciech Szczesny in the near future, as per Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t the Express).
Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma are also said to be interested in the 26-year-old goalkeeper. Spurs will surely be on the lookout for a long-term Hugo Lloris replacement.
The French goalkeeper has been an ever-present figure since making the move from Olympique Lyonnais nearly a decade ago. But he is in the dusk of his playing career.
Lloris is about to turn 36 next month and is on a contract that expires in the summer of 2024. Fraser Forster is approaching his mid-30s and isn’t really the candidate to take over.
What should Spurs do?
Vicario is a rather unknown quantity for those that don’t follow Serie A. While he is 26, he is yet to play for a traditional ‘big club’ in Italy despite spending his entire professional career.
He has played in just 57 top-flight matches. Spurs fans may not be entirely convinced if he is the man brought in to replace a FIFA World Cup winner in Lloris.
On paper, it would arguably be a downgrade, but then again, football is played out there on the field. It would be better, however, to go for players that are almost guaranteed to be a success – such as Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Jan Oblak.
We have been linked with both those La Liga superstars, along with Illan Meslier and Everton’s Jordan Pickford. These players have honed their skills at the biggest stage in European football and would be a far more convincing buy than Vicario.

Common sense dictates that the Italian may not be as expensive an option as the names mentioned above but even if that turns out to be the case, Daniel and Fabio Paratici would be wise not to cut lanes when looking for our new first-team goalkeeper.
