Club News: Matt Doherty scored a brace as Tottenham Hotspur defeat Motherwell 4-0 in friendly

Matt Doherty was the star of the show as Tottenham Hotspur defeated Scottish side Motherwell 4-0 in a mid-season friendly game at the Hotspur Way, earlier on Friday (9 December) [h/t Tottenham Hotspur].

Antonio Conte’s men returned to action after four weeks in a behind-closed-door friendly against the Scottish side. Dejan Kulusevski opened the scoring within three minutes after the Sweden international pounced on a loose ball in the opposition box to open the scoring.

Doherty got his first and our second in the 28th minute after the right-back finished a well-worked move that was started by summer signing midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Fans will hope he uses this as a jumpstart to truly challenge Emerson Royal for the right-wing back spot. It is arguably the one area of the team that has looked dodgy and in need of an upgrade.

Bryan Gil, who has struggled for minutes this season under Conte, got the third in the 40th minute when he tapped home a cut-back from Kulusevski. The Swedish winger has returned from his injury and it is good to see him continuing like he never left.

The 22-year-old would then go on to get another assist as his corner was met by Doherty who made it 4-0 and also got his second of the game. Spurs were dominant throughout and in the end, it was a very comfortable win for Conte’s side.

Another player who put in a good performance was Djed Spence. The 22-year-old, who joined us this summer from Middlesbrough has struggled for game time and put in a decent performance to show Conte that he can be trusted more often going forward.

It was good to see the players put in some decent performance after returning to action after almost a month. Spurs will play another friendly with French side OGC Nice on 21st December, five days before returning to action in the Premier League against Brentford.
