Tottenham Hotspur News: Spurs eye Cody Gakpo, Josko Gvardiol and James Maddison as ‘ideal trio’
Manager Antonio Conte has identified Cody Gakpo, Josko Gvardiol, and James Maddison as the ‘ideal trio’ of signings at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the January transfer window, as per Express.
However, this means they will have to battle a number of Premier League clubs if they are to secure the signings of all three players. Chelsea hold an interest in Gvardiol – the RB Leipzig centre-back who was arguably Croatia’s best player at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Apart from the 20-year-old defender, Spurs may have to battle Newcastle United if the Magpies rekindle their interest in Maddison after having a summer bid turned down by Leicester City.
The competition intensifies when it comes to Gakpo, with Arsenal and Manchester United both eyeing the wantaway 23-year-old PSV Eindhoven striker. He was electric for the Netherlands at the World Cup, and scored thrice in five games for them.
Gakpo is also valued at around 50million Pounds, which isn’t an exorbitant fee when it comes to his age, versatility, and ceiling. He can play anywhere across the frontline and has regularly plundered in goals for PSV over the past couple of seasons.
Who to go for?
Even in an ideal world, signing all three of the aforementioned players would be a far-fetched dream. They are all players in their 20s who are vital for their current clubs and have suitors apart from Spurs.
If it comes to picking out one or two players from that list, perhaps Gvardiol and Maddison would be the ideal pick. We lack the profile that the England international brings to the table – that of an attacking, chance-creating midfielder.
Gvardiol, meanwhile, is surely destined to be one of the defensive greats in the future if he continues to develop at this trajectory. Gakpo is brilliant, make no mistake about that.
