Djed Spence could leave Tottenham Hotspur on loan this January

According to ESPN, Djed Spence is likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur on loan in the ongoing January transfer window.

The 22-year-old joined the club from Middlesbrough last summer but has failed to garner much playtime in north London. He has made just six appearances across all competitions for Tottenham, playing just 43 minutes.

As things stand, Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal are ahead of him in the pecking order at right-back. Despite being keen to impress, the youngster has a real fight on his hands to get the nod from Antonio Conte.

Spence, as it stands, is keen to succeed at Tottenham. However, all parties realise that the chance of him gaining regular playtime anytime soon is slim. Therefore, a move away on loan would be the best bet forward.

There is no shortage of suitors and Spence could opt for a side that best suits his game. Apart from four English sides, German giants, Bayer Leverkusen are also in the fray. Several Englishmen have succeeded in the German league in recent times and it remains to be seen if Spence will join that list.

An injury to either Emerson or Doherty could throw a spanner into Tottenham’s plans for Spence. It is debatable if the north Londoners will wait until the final days of the January window to sanction Spence’s departure just to be sure.

At 22, the Englishman has the best years of his career ahead of him. Despite impressing in the Championship last season, the step up to the Premier League is not for everyone. A spell of regular games out on loan will serve him well and hopefully develop his game ahead of the 2023/23 campaign.

Emerson’s time at Tottenham has been a troubled one with the player falling largely short of expectations. Should he leave in the summer, Spurs could do with Spence being ready to don the role. However, sitting on the bench is unlikely to aid that approach.

It will also give us the chance to watch him in action properly and assess him on the basis of that. It’s nearly impossible to know how he is doing in training sessions and exactly why he is so low in Conte’s pecking order. But we have to ensure it’s to a club where he can play regularly at a high level – the Premier League would be ideal.
