Tottenham Hotspur ahead of Ajax in the race for Brentford’s David Raya
Tottenham Hotspur are leading Ajax Amsterdam in the race for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, as per the Times (Subscription Required).
Spurs supposedly enquired about the 27-year-old Spain international’s situation. However, Brentford responded that he isn’t for sale in January, which makes sense given the London club’s ambitions for the second half of the season.
Brentford are currently eighth in the league, above Chelsea and Liverpool, and would fancy their chances of sneaking into the top seven. However, the Bees could be faced with a troublesome situation in the summer – one that can favour us.
He would enter the final year of his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium at the end of the campaign if he doesn’t extend his current deal. That would seriously push Brentford into taking a decision.
We must get Raya
If he decides that he doesn’t want to extend his contract with Brentford, does the club decide to cash in on him or use his services for the entirety of his contract? That former could be a financially sound option.
The Spaniard isn’t the most elite name in the market but he has slowly shown that he has what it takes to succeed at the very top. Having come from Blackburn Rovers to Brentford three-and-a-half years ago, his rise has been immaculate.
A move to Tottenham would certainly be an upward trajectory in his career. He could be a successor to Hugo Lloris here, who has turned 36 and has become error-prone in recent seasons – if he wasn’t already before that.

Ajax’s interest could go against us. The Amsterdam-based giants would also be eager to secure a new goalkeeper considering Remko Pasveer is 39 years old already. However, Spurs will offer Raya the option to play in a league he knows well and in a city he has played his football in for the past several years.
