Cristian Romero praises Tottenham star after win against Sheffield United

Tottenham Hotspur doctors could have cost Cristian Romero his 2022 FIFA World Cup medal

If Cristian Romero had paid heed to Tottenham Hotspur doctors’ advice, he could have missed Argentina’s journey to the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy in Qatar.

The Argentine centre-back picked up a hamstring injury leading up to the World Cup. It was, of course, a very stressful moment for the player personally as he risked missing the chance to play at the FIFA World Cup for the first time in his career.

According to the former Juventus and Atalanta defender, Spurs doctors told him he would not be able to play in Qatar. On second opinion with the national team doctors, he received better news.

He told TyC Sports in an interview (h/t Express):

“When I got injured before the World Cup, the Tottenham doctors told me that it was impossible to play in the group stages. But then I contacted the National Team doctors, showed all the images and they told me not to worry and it was nothing serious.”

It isn’t rare to have two doctors differ in their opinion regarding a particular problem. Spurs, however, could have been trying to protect the player, and with it, their best interests.

They are, after all, paying him a handsome salary week in, week out. Argentina’s doctors, meanwhile, would have been inclined towards having the player fit for the World Cup campaign.

As it turned out, he earned seven of his 19 senior caps for La Albiceleste in Qatar. He played in each game of his team’s World Cup cup campaign and helped them win the trophy for the third time in their glittering history.

At 24, he has won the Copa America and World Cup with the national team. Hopefully, he translates that success at club level and with it, ends our long wait for a trophy. He is in good form right now.
