Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies reveals dressing room reaction to Antonio Conte’s return after ‘strange’ absence
Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has shared the dressing room’s relief to have manager Antonio Conte back after an extended period on the sidelines.
The former Inter Milan manager underwent gallbladder surgery at the end of the January transfer window. He seemingly returned to action too soon and was advised in mid-February to only return to Spurs when fully fit.
His absence has seen assistant coach Cristian Stellini take charge of the team, who led us to impressive wins in the league against West Ham United, Chelsea and Manchester City.
Conte has been involved in some way or the other. For example, he managed Spurs when they lost 1-0 to AC Milan and in their 4-1 league loss against Leicester City.
Davies happy with Conte return
But now, according to the Express, Spurs finally have Conte back in training. He returned to the club on Sunday (5 March) and is expected to take charge of his team’s UEFA Champions League clash in N17 later this week.
Davies is one of the players who was breathed back to life at Tottenham under Conte. The Italian tactician has used him as a left-sided centre-half on a regular basis, but the Welshman has recently played down the left flank as well.
Speaking about Conte’s return, the former Swansea City star said:
“We’re really looking forward to getting him back. It’s been a while now, but we have a huge game Wednesday, and it is very important he is with us. It’s obviously very strange, but we’ve been in very capable hands with Cristian Stellini. The manager wasn’t too far away. He’s been there as a point of contact. It will be good to have him back.”
Conte will need his players to be at their best against I Rossoneri as they aim to overturn a first-leg 1-0 deficit. The former Chelsea and Juventus boss’ presence on the touchline will be a massive boost.
