Ex-Barcelona boss Luis Enrique open to Tottenham Hotspur job if Antonio Conte walks

According to the Times (Subscription Required), former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is open to becoming Antonio Conte’s successor at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Italian tactician is in the final season of his contract in N17. His contract situation is starting to become a major headache given the level of uncertainty it has put the team and fans under.

Amidst this, Enrique, who was Barcelona’s manager from 2014 and 2017 and won the treble with them in the 2014-15 season, is open to becoming the new Spurs boss if Conte walks this summer – or before that.

Enrique was Spain’s manager at the 2020 UEFA European Championship and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He didn’t manage to impress in either tournament and ultimately left his office in December last year.

Enrique to Spurs?

Enrique is currently a free agent. He has also managed Celta Vigo and AS Roma in the past and the Spaniard, at 52, is of an ideal age where he can mix the ideas of the previous generation with the ones being used in modern football.

He was a highly successful player during his time at Barcelona and has also translated that success in his management. Of course, having Lionel Messi made things a bit easy for him with the Catalan giants.

But to command big dressing rooms with major names takes character. We can use that here as well. To inform the likes of Sergio Ramos and Thiago Alcantara that they weren’t going to the World Cup would have taken some courage.

It’s good to have in the mix in case Conte walks. Let’s not forget that Spurs, who are on course for another season in the UEFA Champions League, continue to be a major draw in European football for quality managers.
