Wayne Rooney pays his tribute to Tottenham ace Harry Kane for breaking England scoring record

Tottenham Hotspur ace Harry Kane scored for England against Italy in Naples last night, overtaking Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney as the country’s all-time top goalscorer.

It was the striker’s 54th Three Lions’ strike in just his 81st appearance for the nation. It adds another feather to the cap of the 29-year-old’s illustrious goalscoring career.

It was double joy for Kane on the night as his goal from the spot did not just take him to the top of the goalscoring charts but also helped England secure a win. Gareth Southgate’s men have now kicked off their Euro 2024 qualifiers with all three points on the board.

Rooney took to Twitter after Kane’s historic goal to congratulate the Tottenham ace for his moment. Becoming the all-time goalscorer for a nation such as England is no joke and it is good to see Rooney show excellent sportsmanship.

England boss Southgate also followed suit and lavished praise on Kane. The 52-year-old has played with some of the nation’s best strikers in his day and it is a testament to Kane’s quality that he is privy to such praise.

“To break the record in the manner he did given the recent history was an indication of his strength of character and his mentality.”

It is unfortunate that Kane has not been able to back up his goalscoring exploits with trophies. He still has a few years at the top and will hopefully break that duck with Tottenham. The sooner he does it, the better for all parties.

Kane will go down in history as arguably the greatest striker that England have ever seen. However, one can argue that his standing in the list of all-time icons could be called into question due to the acute lack of silverware. The time is now for the 29-year-old to focus his attentions on collective success over personal glory.
