“From this history”- Stellini credits former Tottenham boss as his tactical patron saint

Tottenham Hotspur interim boss Cristian Stellini has admitted that Antonio Conte is the reference point for his ideas and style of play.

Spurs recently parted ways with the former Inter Milan manager. Subsequently, his assistant was given the reins of the North London side. However, the Lilywhites did not see a new manager bounce after losing two points to Everton in the 1-1 draw.

Tottenham played the same drab football at Goodison Park that we saw under Conte. Speaking to the media via football.london, Stellini argued that his approach to football is inspired somewhat by the former Chelsea manager, considering the time they have spent together.

“You have to accept that I was an assistant manager for a long time with Antonio so we have to accept that my mind came from this history.

“But I don’t think that as a manager, if you change something different, you have a different result [at Everton]. It is in the mind of the player and in the way you want to play a match that change this.”

The 48-year-old’s team selection and tactics were eerily similar to that of Conte. However, that is to be expected in a sense. The two have worked together on and off over the decade.

In the current campaign, Spurs have looked fragile at the back. We are having a tough time keeping clean sheets or holding on to our leads. Our previous two fixtures have ended in a draw after being in front.

Against Southampton, the North London side crumbled. Subsequently, Conte was relieved of his duties in the Lilywhites’ dugout. However, instead of hiring a new manager, the Italian’s backroom staff have taken charge of the team.

Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that Tottenham are still playing like they used to. The match against Everton proved once again that Spurs lack conviction and a fighting spirit.

Keeping Stellini in charge does not seem like an inspiring decision. Spurs are still in with a chance to finish in the top four. However, if things continue in a similar fashion, it is hard to see us playing in the Champions League next season.
